Why does the devil have all the good music?

There are so many things I could talk about today.  Stuff that happened today, like the controversy over red-band trailers online (I’m for red-band trailers online, I’m against concerned parents who bitch).  Stuff that happened earlier in the week that I didn’t get a chance to talk about (and won’t mention here because then I’ll start talking about them and I haven’t decided if I should yet).

But what I want to show you is this music video.  This really really bad music video.  Watch it, because I’m about to tell you just exactly why it offends me so.  And you might be surprised.

“Shine” by Final Placement from sharity world on Vimeo.

Now, where do I begin?  First, a little back story.  This band is from one of my old stomping grounds- Midland, Texas.  All of those outside shots in the video?  I recognize them.  I spent 11 years in that town.  That bit of information is important.  The band is composed of high school kids, but more specifically, Midland Christian School kids.  Midland Christian is a private school where the holier than thou (and there are lots of those in Midland) rich people (and there are even more of those in Midland) send their kids so that they won’t be contaminated by the rest of us.

Midland, by the way, has more millionaires per capita than any other city in the state.  More than Dallas, more than Houston.  It’s an oil town.  Lots and lots of oil, lots and lots of oil money.  Cut out the millionaires, and you still have all of the major oil companies with offices there.  That means many wealthy executives, many wealthy engineers, many wealthy geologists.

Make of that what you will.  I don’t know these kids, so for me to say that they are from wealthy families and have been given everything they ever wanted would be wrong.  It would be wrong of me to say they are all probably driving brand new cars that didn’t cost a dime less than $30K.

It would be wrong of me to say that because I don’t know these kids.  But if I were a betting man, I’d put my money on it.

Now, let’s stop and analyze the video.  They suck.  I’m sorry, I know that’s a harsh thing to say.  But I am a semi-professional music critic, and I was raised by my Momma to always tell the truth.  This sucks.  They aren’t in tune.  The guitars aren’t in tune with each other.  The singer can’t stay on key.  The drummer almost manages to stay in time, so that’s good.

I read what was supposedly a Q&A with the lead guitar player from the video, in which he explained that he and the drummer are NOT part of the band, they were helping out a friend and didn’t realize he actually intended to put this online.  He claims that the vocals, bass, and rhythm tracks were laid down before the drum and lead, so they are having to try and match the garbage that was already there.  I want to believe him, I really do.

But they’re just high school kids.  Mommy and Daddy bought them really nice instruments and video equipment so they made a video.  Why does this offend me?  Beyond the wasted money, beyond the wasted time, beyond the fact that some really talented kids could have made something kick-ass had they had access to those resources, why does this offend me?

Because they are calling it Christian.  This is supposed to be for the Lord.  Happy birthday, Jesus, hope you like crap!

Let me say this very plainly – it is my belief that 99.9 percent of the people in this world who call themselves Christian have no idea who Christ is.  What passes for Christianity in this world we live in is primarily people using the name of Jesus to sell their own agenda.  Our leaders use the name to control the people under them and justify their own evil.  Preachers and evangelists use the name to control the people under them and exploit them for their time, money, and in some sad cases their bodies.  The people who represent the face of Christianity to the world sicken me.  There’s a verse in the Bible that describes the fate of most of these people.  When they stand before the Lord and say Look at all the things I did in your name, He will respond Depart from me, you cursed, I never knew you.

I tell you that because I’m about to tell you this.  I consider myself a Christian.  I believe in God.  I believe in Jesus.  I do not believe in the Jesus that Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, George Bush, and the douchebags at the Westboro Baptist Church claim they believe in.  The Jesus I believe in doesn’t hate “sinners”.  He doesn’t hate homosexuals.  He doesn’t want his followers to stand outside abortion clinics and harass and insult the women going there, let alone blow the clinic up.  He doesn’t care if you vote Democrat, or Republican, or Communist.  He’s about love, compassion, forgiveness, and treating your fellow man with kindness and understanding.

I could go on and on, but I’m not going to.  Because I didn’t come here to preach to you.  I don’t do that.  If you don’t believe, that’s cool with me.  If you believe something else, that’s cool with me.  I’m actually quite fond of most of the tenants of Buddhism.  I’m done, and we may never speak of this again.  All I ask is that, when I tell you I’m a Christian, you have the decency not to tar and feather me with the same brush you use for the lying cocksuckers in the religious right.

What I was trying to say is this – if you’re making music for the deity you worship – doesn’t said deity deserve better than this?  I’m relatively confidant that Shiva would blast your ass if you pulled that on him.  Lucky for these boys, Jesus is a bit more forgiving.

That’s all I have to say on this.  I wanted to show you the video and make fun of it and have a few laughs.  At the same time, I felt like I needed to say some things in response to the actions of the liars and charlatans who give my beliefs a bad name.

Now lets all pretend that this never happened.  I’m still the same foul mouthed reprobate you’ve all known and loved for lo these many years.  Wipe this conversation from your mind.  Except for the part where I called the Religious Right a bunch of lying cocksuckers.  You can remember that.

Be good to each other.
