So long, Democracy!

Corporations have a right to free speech?

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS from here on, because I’m a lousy typist. And lazy.) today ruled that it’s unconstitutional to ban or  limit Corporate spending on elections.  Because a corporation is legally a person, and people have a right to free speech.

This is one of the most asinine things I’ve ever heard.  And I’ve heard lots of asinine things.

I try to avoid political discussions for the most part.  You have your beliefs, I have my beliefs, we vote, that’s what democracy is all about.  Or at least, that’s what democracy is supposed to be about.  People voting for representatives who will govern according to their beliefs about what is best for their constituents.

And now SCOTUS has decided that corporations can throw as much money into a campaign as they want.  There’s no way THAT can backfire on us, is there?

Enjoy your last few years of freedom, my friends.  Now that they’ll be allowed to PUBLICLY buy candidates, we’ll all soon be bowing to the will of our corporate overlords.  Be ye a Democrat or be ye a Republican, this is bad news for anyone who isn’t filthy rich.  From now on, our government will be run by the Golden Rule…

He who has the gold, makes the rules.

The will of the people?  It was a sweet idea, but the people can’t afford to buy a politician.  We’re moving towards a future like the one depicted in Rollerball (1975), where countries no longer exist, it’s just corporations.  And with our luck, we won’t even get the kickass dystopian future with James Caan.  We’ll be living in the 2002 version with Chris Klein.  Lame.

But enough of that.  Rome can burn.  I’m going to watch movies, see bands, and write.  Art may not save us, but it will preserve our sanity.

And when things get too bad, there’s always Australia.

Right on. Let’s make some art.
    Canada’s an option, too.
